The Power of Your Words: Speaking Life, Faith, and Purpose

We may hold the power between success and failure for the people around us. Proverbs 18:21 teaches us that “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” Our words carry far more weight than we often realize.

When I was a child, I learned the saying, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” The older I’ve become, the more I’ve realized that couldn’t be further from the truth. Broken bones eventually heal, but words can stay with us for a lifetime.

Think about your own dreams. How many people have spoken into them? A hundred people can tell you they believe in you, but sometimes it only takes one person saying, “You’ll never make it,” for doubt to begin creeping into your heart. Suddenly, you’re ready to quit.

Now think about the next time someone shares their dream with you.

It may not seem realistic. It may not make sense to you. But who are we to decide what someone else can or cannot accomplish? Just because we don’t understand their dream doesn’t mean it isn’t the path they’re meant to pursue.

Many people from my generation don’t understand why someone would want to become a YouTuber or content creator. Yet every year, ordinary people build businesses, support their families, and even become millionaires by creating videos online. What once sounded impossible has become reality for countless people.

Sometimes our discouragement isn’t intentional. When we’ve struggled to accomplish our own dreams, it’s easy to assume others will fail too. We don’t want them to waste their time, so we speak from our own disappointment instead of from hope.

But God tells us in Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you…” God has a purpose for you. He has uniquely gifted you, and He calls each of us to use those gifts for His glory. While our dreams should always be surrendered to His will, we should never let fear or discouragement keep us from pursuing the purpose He has placed before us.

The whisper telling you that your purpose doesn’t matter, that you’ll never be good enough, or that you should just give up doesn’t come from God. And when we repeat those same lies to someone else, we’re helping spread discouragement instead of hope.

Let’s choose a different path.

Speak life over yourself. Speak life over your family, your friends, and even strangers. Encourage people to pursue the purpose God has for them. You never know when one encouraging sentence could be the very thing that keeps someone from giving up.

Your words have power.

Use them wisely.
