The Hardest Walk: Pursuing God’s Calling

The hardest thing we will probably ever do is walk.

I don’t mean walking down the street or into the next room—I mean walking in faith.

As believers, I truly believe we all have a calling on our lives. That calling might not be to become a pastor or take on a traditional ministry role. It might be something like becoming an author, a filmmaker, a musician, or something else that uses our gifts creatively.

As I write this, I’m 40 years old—and I’ve barely begun to pursue my dreams. Yes, I’ve written a novella and some short stories, but I have so many more ideas I haven’t followed through on. Why? Because I tend to look at things through my natural eyes. I see my sales aren’t where I think they should be, or I’m not getting as many reviews as I hoped. And many times, I’ve struggled with the thought: Maybe this isn’t what I’m supposed to do.

Recently, I listened to a podcast where John Cooper, the lead singer of Skillet, was talking to the band’s guitarist, Seth Morrison. Seth said something I found truly profound and life-changing. I’m paraphrasing, but he said something along the lines of:

“We should be asking God how we can use our gifts to help build His Kingdom.”

That hit me hard. Because while I do believe God wants me to be successful as a podcaster and an author, success  shouldn’t be my main focus.

My focus should be: How am I helping build the Kingdom with the gifts I’ve been given?

I can’t expect results if I’m not doing what I’m supposed to do—or if I am doing it, but with the wrong intentions.

So now, I have a newfound determination. I want to push harder—to write blogs, books, do podcasts, make videos—but to do it all for God’s glory and for His Kingdom.

Romans 11:29 says:

“For the gifts and the calling of God are without repentance.”

To me, that means if God has given you a dream or a calling, He’s not sorry He gave it to you. He gave it to you for a reason.

Too often, we jump straight to thinking about end results—or what we hope the end results will be.

Sure, I’d love to say I’m a best-selling author. I’d love to have the number one podcast in the world.

But that may not be God’s plan.

God’s plan for me might be for my podcast to reach just 500 people—and for my books to never make a best-seller list.

But that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t be writing, podcasting, making videos, or doing whatever He’s called me to do.

So I want to encourage you: Take a step of faith.

Whatever you feel God has given you to do—whether it’s writing books, writing songs, preaching, teaching, or something else—start.

Maybe you’re like me, and sometimes you hold back because you’re worried about what other people will think or say. But it’s so important that we take that step. It’s important that we walk in our calling.

Because I truly believe: We will never be fulfilled in life until we start walking in faith—pursuing the dreams and callings God has placed in our hearts.
