A Seat at the Table with a Dreamer
Who Would I Invite to Dinner If I Knew They’d Show Up?
That’s a tough question. Some might say a politician, a famous singer, or—since I’m a writer—maybe my favorite author. A lot of Christians would say Jesus, and while I absolutely understand that answer, I think it’s often given out of habit. So if I really had the chance to invite anyone to dinner and knew they would actually show up, my choice might surprise you.
I’d invite Jesse Cole—the owner of the Savannah Bananas.
Yes, I know it sounds crazy. But hear me out.
I’m a huge fan of Banana Ball. If you’re not familiar with it, it’s a version of baseball that’s far more entertaining. There’s dancing, shenanigans, and plenty of showmanship. But beneath all the fun, it’s still a real game with real teams who are trying to win. It’s entertainment with heart.
But my reason for choosing Jesse Cole isn’t just because of the fun of Banana Ball. It’s because I see in him something I deeply connect with: the passion to chase a dream—no matter the cost.
Jesse Cole lost everything in the pursuit of his vision. He and his wife were sleeping on an air mattress, broke, struggling, but they didn’t give up. Now, Banana Ball is played in Major League stadiums, sells out NFL-sized arenas, and brings joy to thousands. He went from rock bottom to building something wildly original and successful.
As someone who feels called to follow my own dreams of being an author, podcaster, and blogger, I can’t think of a more inspiring dinner guest. His story isn’t just about baseball. It’s about faith, grit, creativity, and resilience.
And that’s a conversation I’d never forget.
